Major Victory: NUC Approves Faculty of Law for Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU)

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially granted approval for the immediate commencement of the Faculty of Law program at Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU).

This significant development, effective from the 2025/2026 academic session, follows a successful resource verification visit conducted by a panel of NUC experts. The visit confirmed AKSU's readiness in terms of human and material resources required to run a globally competitive Law program.

A letter dated November 10, 2025, confirmed the establishment of the full-time mode of the LL.B Law Programme to be run at the University's Main Campus.

The NUC explicitly directed the University to ensure the program adheres strictly to the provisions of the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) for the Nigerian University System, guaranteeing the quality and growth of the approved course.

The establishment of the Faculty of Law is a crowning achievement for the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Otoabasi Akpan. In a remarkably short three-month tenure, Professor Akpan has overseen unprecedented expansion at AKSU, reflecting a strong commitment to educational development.

This milestone adds to the recent establishment of The Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, featuring six new departments, The Faculty of Computing and Information Technology, with five departments.

In addition to these new faculties, the Acting VC has successfully facilitated accreditation and resource verification for 30 post-graduate and several undergraduate programmes. His vision has also led to the creation of over 30 new Institutes and Centres aimed at advancing research and attracting crucial funding.

This development further positions AKSU as a key player in legal education within the South-South region.
