UNIUYO: Prof. Gbadebo Odewunmi of LASU Steps in as Acting Vice Chancellor

The University of Uyo (UNIUYO), Akwa Ibom State, has officially announced the appointment of Professor Samuel Gbadebo Odewunmi as its Acting Vice Chancellor. Professor Odewunmi, a distinguished academic from Lagos State University (LASU), steps into the role following the expiration of the tenure of the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nyaudoh Ndaeyo.


The Appointment Details

The appointment was confirmed via an official letter dated 15th December, 2025, issued by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University Governing Council, Dr. Muiz Banire, SAN. The letter, signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mrs Blossom E. Okorie, noted that the decision follows the approval of the University Visitor.

The letter reads in part:

“Further to the approval of the Visitor to the University of Uyo, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, as communicated by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, CON, I write on behalf of the Chairman of the Governing Council of the University to convey your appointment as the Acting Vice-Chancellor, University of Uyo, Nigeria.”


Profile of Professor Gbadebo Odewunmi

Professor Odewunmi is a renowned expert in Transport Planning and Policy. Before this national assignment at UNIUYO, he served as the Dean of the School of Transport and Logistics at Lagos State University (LASU). His expertise is expected to provide steady leadership for the institution during this transitional period.

The move to appoint an Acting Vice Chancellor comes after recent efforts to appoint a substantive successor to Professor Ndaeyo were not concluded before his term ended. The University community looks forward to Professor Odewunmi’s leadership as the Council continues its search for a permanent head of the institution.
