Hon. Unyime Idem Bags PhD, Calls for Merit-Based Governance

Federal lawmaker Hon. Unyime Idem has successfully defended his dissertation at the Federal University, Lokoja, earning a Doctoral Degree (Ph.D.) in Leadership and Strategic Studies. His research, titled "Leadership and Nation Building in Nigeria," provides a compelling blueprint for national progress, arguing that a lack of merit-based and inclusive governance has historically hindered Nigeria's development.

In his dissertation, Idem, who represents the Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency, pinpointed the failure of past presidents to implement equitable policies as a key factor undermining nation-building efforts. His recommendations are a clarion call for a new approach to leadership.

Key among his suggestions is the formulation of a "Nigerian dream"—a unifying national vision that transcends the country's diverse ethnic and religious boundaries. He also advocates for the strict enforcement of the Federal Character Principle and the implementation of a merit-based system for appointments.

Additionally, Idem's research calls for deepening electoral reforms to reduce identity-based political mobilization, an impartial fight against corruption, and the promotion of civic education to foster a stronger sense of national identity among Nigerians.

The lawmaker's performance received high praise from his academic panel. His supervisor, Professor Gbenga Ibileye, who is also the Provost of the Postgraduate School at the Federal University, Lokoja, commended his work, noting that his insights were not surprising given his current leadership role in the country.

Hon. Idem expressed his gratitude to the university, his lecturers, and the examination panel for their meticulous guidance throughout his academic journey, which began in 2021. He concluded by urging the Federal University, Lokoja, to maintain its high standards of academic excellence.
