Modernising Nigerian University Education: NUC Unveils New Degree Programmes
The landscape of higher education in Nigeria is set for a major transformation as the National Universities Commission (NUC) officially approves new academic degree programmes for Nigerian universities.
This landmark decision, announced via a circular signed by the Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu, is a strategic effort to modernise the education system, enhance its global competitiveness, and directly address the demands of fast-evolving global industries.
The newly approved courses represent a significant leap, introducing programmes in cutting-edge and future-forward fields. Key additions include:
* B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence
* B.Sc. Data Science
* B.Eng. Nuclear Engineering
* B.Sc. Intelligence and Security Studies
These programmes were meticulously developed under the 2023 Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) framework. According to the NUC, the curriculum benefited from extensive input by top experts across the Nigerian University System (NUS).
"The approval of these CCMAS programmes confirms the Commission’s ongoing commitment to strengthening quality assurance mechanisms, enhancing relevance and aligning the educational ecosystem in Nigeria with emerging global trends," the NUC stated.

* B.Sc. Geomatics Engineering

* B.Sc. Community Health Science
* B.Sc. Intelligence and Security Studies
* B.Sc. Islamic Economics and Finance
* B.Sc. Parasitology and Entomology
* B.Sc. Telecommunication Science
* B.Sc. Water, Sanitation and Hygiene
* B.Sc. Cooperative Economics and Management
* B.Sc. Nuclear Science
* B.Eng. Nuclear Engineering
* B.Sc. Environmental Health Science
Implementation and Directives
The Commission has issued a directive to all universities to immediately circulate the new CCMAS documents to relevant faculties and academic units. Institutions are required to develop their unique institutional components in strict adherence to the new curriculum guidelines.
Universities aspiring to roll out any of these new NUC-approved courses must complete the mandatory resource assessment visit and are expected to commence implementation as early as the 2023/2024 academic session.
This move is poised to equip Nigerian graduates with skills highly demanded in the modern global economy, making them more competitive both locally and internationally.
