Education Minister Debunks 'Baseless' Claims: "JAMB Remains Sole Authority for Nigerian Tertiary Admissions" 🇳🇬



​The Federal Ministry of Education has issued a strong warning to the public, categorically debunking widely circulated, misleading reports that the authority of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) over tertiary institution admissions in Nigeria has been revoked. The Ministry reaffirmed that JAMB remains the sole legally empowered body for this crucial national process.


The Core of the Confusion: Misinformation Spreads

A flurry of false news stories and online posts had erroneously claimed that the Federal Ministry of Education had scrapped the requirement for JAMB examinations for admission into Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. These publications suggested a complete overhaul of the established admission framework.


​Minister Alausa Reaffirms JAMB's Indispensable Role

​The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa CON, addressed the matter, dismissing the report as “false, baseless, and did not originate from the Federal Ministry of Education.”

​In a press release signed by the Director, Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, Minister Alausa unequivocally stated:

"At no point did the Ministry issue or authorise any statement suggesting that JAMB is no longer mandatory for admission into tertiary institutions."

He emphasised that JAMB's role is statutory and legally empowered for:

Conducting entrance examinations.

Coordinating admissions into all tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

The Minister stressed that the established admission processes through JAMB remain "fully operational," and the public should disregard any contrary information in its entirety.


Commitment to Integrity, Transparency, and Merit

The Ministry reiterated its unwavering collaboration with JAMB and other relevant agencies. This partnership is crucial for maintaining transparency, fairness, and credibility within the nation's tertiary education admission system.

The Federal Ministry of Education is committed to protecting the integrity of the process, ensuring that merit and due process guide every admission into higher institutions.


A Call for Vigilance and Official Sources

To counter the spread of dangerous misinformation, the Ministry has urged the general public, especially prospective students, parents, and tertiary institutions, to rely solely on official communication channels from the Ministry of Education and JAMB for all accurate and verified information on admission policies and education-related matters.

The Ministry also cautioned media houses, bloggers, and online platforms to verify information from official sources before publication, warning against the dissemination of unverified claims that could cause unnecessary confusion in the education sector.

The statement concluded by reiterating that there has been "no change in the existing role of JAMB which remains central and indispensable in Nigeria's tertiary education framework."
