FUTIA Launches Flagship Engineering Program to Bridge Theory-Practice Gap
The Federal University of Technology Ikot Abasi (FUTIA) has launched its maiden Students’ Work Experience Programme (SWEP) for second-year engineering students. The initiative, hailed by the university as a strategic move to boost the resourcefulness of its engineering programs, aims to seamlessly blend academic theory with real-world technical skills.
At the flag-off exercise on Tuesday, 9th September 2025, at the University Lecture Theatre, Ikot Abasi, FUTIA's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Leo Daniel, a distinguished Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics, highlighted the program's significance. He noted that SWEP aligns perfectly with the university's core mandate to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Prof. Daniel encouraged the students to fully embrace the nine-week program, emphasising that the hands-on experience would prepare them for careers that contribute to national development.

The program, a three-credit-unit course, is a deep dive into the practical side of engineering. It introduces students to general engineering processes, provides hands-on experience with equipment, and instils critical safety precautions. According to the Provost of the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology, Dr. Whyte Akpan, the goal is to make students career-ready from an early stage.
The successful flag-off of the program signals a significant investment in the future of FUTIA's engineering students. By prioritising a skill-based approach, the university is enhancing the academic curriculum and preparing a new generation of engineers to become innovative, self-reliant, and valuable contributors to the nation's industrial sector.
